I have been contacted by a number of constituents with regard to the restriction of fireworks.
I appreciate the desire to restrict the use of fireworks to certain days. While many people enjoy their use on special occasions I know others do not like them and I know that it causes distress to animals who are particularly impacted by the noise.
Constituents should be aware that firework regulations allow fireworks for home use to be sold during the traditional firework periods of Bonfire Night, New Year's Eve, Chinese New Year and Diwali. Suppliers who wish to sell fireworks outside the traditional periods must comply with stringent conditions before being granted a licence by their local licensing authority. This means the availability and use of fireworks outside the traditional periods has been greatly reduced. Although there is some use of fireworks outside the traditional periods, the Government believes that the majority of people who use fireworks do so at the appropriate times of year and have a sensible and responsible attitude towards them.
I have written to the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills to raise this issue. I will post any response received on this section of my website.
I am due to be speaking in a debate in the House of Commons chamber at the same time as the Westminster Hall debate on this matter so will be unable to speak on this subject at the allotted time.
