In questions to the Education Minister, Huw said business rates were a nail in the coffin for many childcare providers in England citing two primary childcare providers in his constituency of Bexhill and Battle who have now closed as a result. Huw asked the Minister what more could be done for providers in England (primary childcare providers in Scotland and Wales do not have to pay business rates) saying it was “not right” to tax spaces where young people are nurtured.
The Minister said while two local authorities had made provisions for childcare providers struggling to cope with paying business rates, he would look to see what other local authorities can to do help.
